If contacts disappeared from your iPhone and from iCloud, you can usually restore contacts from iCloud using an archive that Apple keeps automatically. The tool sits on iCloud.com, not on the phone, and it works differently from what most people expect: it brings back a whole earlier version of your list, not single contacts. This guide covers the steps, what happens to your current contacts, and how to avoid losing new ones in the process.

Short answer: On a computer or tablet, go to icloud.com/contacts, open the App Launcher, choose Data Recovery, then Restore Contacts, and pick a version from before the contacts went missing. The version you pick replaces your current contacts on all your devices, but iCloud archives your current list first, so you can switch back. It only covers contacts stored in iCloud.

First: are the contacts gone from iCloud, or only from the iPhone?

"Contacts disappeared from iPhone and iCloud" and "contacts missing from my iPhone" look the same on the phone, but they need different fixes. Check before you restore anything.

  1. On a computer, sign in at icloud.com with your Apple Account and open Contacts. Apple notes that you need a tablet or computer to use Contacts on iCloud.com.
  2. If the missing people are there, your iCloud data is fine and the problem is on the phone. Do not restore an archive. Instead:
    • In Settings, tap your name, then iCloud, and check that Contacts is turned on.
    • In the Contacts app, tap Lists and make sure you are viewing all contacts, not a single list or account.
    • Check that you are signed in with the same Apple Account on the phone as on iCloud.com.
  3. If they are missing on iCloud.com too, they were deleted or changed in iCloud itself, and that change synced everywhere. That is when Data Recovery helps.

Also remember that iCloud only holds contacts saved to iCloud. People saved to Gmail, Outlook, a work account or On My iPhone live elsewhere. If you are not sure where yours were, read where iPhone contacts are stored, and for Gmail contacts use restore contacts from Google.

Before you restore: save what you have now

Restoring an archive swaps your entire contact list for an older one. Anyone you added or edited after that archive was made will not be in the restored version. iCloud does archive your current list before the restore, so nothing is lost for good, but switching back and forth is clumsy. A two-minute export makes it much easier:

  • On iCloud.com, open Contacts, select all contacts and choose Export vCard from the actions or settings menu. Save the file on the computer.
  • Write down the people you added or changed recently, especially in the last few days.
  • Tell anyone who shares your Apple Account devices not to edit contacts until you are done.

How to restore contacts from iCloud, step by step

These are the steps in Apple's guide to restoring contacts on iCloud.com. Labels may shift slightly as iCloud.com changes.

  1. On a computer or tablet, go to icloud.com/contacts and sign in with your Apple Account.
  2. Select the App Launcher button in the toolbar (the grid of squares), then select Data Recovery. On some versions of the page, Data Recovery is also linked at the bottom of the iCloud.com home screen.
  3. Select Restore Contacts. Available versions are listed by the date and time they were archived.
  4. Next to the version you want, select Restore and confirm.
  5. Wait until iCloud says the restore is finished. Apple warns that changes made during the restore are not saved, so leave your contacts alone until then.

The restored list then syncs to every device where Contacts is turned on in iCloud settings. Give your iPhone a few minutes, then open Contacts and check the people you were missing.

If the version you need is not listed

Apple notes that after a recent deletion, it can take up to 24 hours for a new archive to appear. If you deleted something this morning, the list may not show it yet. Apple does not promise how far back the archives go, so do not wait long if you need an older version.

What restoring an archive does to your current contacts

This is the part worth understanding before you click. According to Apple's page on recovering deleted contacts, calendars and bookmarks, the version you select replaces the existing contacts on all your devices.

What happens
Contacts in the archiveCome back on every device using iCloud Contacts
Contacts added after the archive dateRemoved from the current list
Edits made after the archive dateReverted to the older version
Your list just before the restoreArchived by iCloud, so you can restore it again
Contacts in Gmail, work or other accountsNot touched; they are not stored in iCloud

After the restore, compare with the vCard you exported. If a few new people are missing, import just those from the file, or add them by hand. If the restore made things worse, go back to Data Recovery and restore the archive iCloud made just before your restore.

What does not bring iCloud contacts back

A few common attempts waste time:

  • Restoring the iPhone from a backup. An iCloud backup of the phone does not include data that already syncs with iCloud, such as iCloud Contacts. Those come from iCloud itself, so a device restore will not change them.
  • Turning iCloud Contacts off and on. This can fix a phone that stopped syncing, but it does not recover contacts deleted in iCloud. When you turn it off, iOS asks whether to keep a copy on the phone; read that prompt carefully.
  • Recovery programs. Tools that promise to recover deleted iPhone contacts cannot reach archives that only Apple holds, and some ask for your Apple Account password. Do not give it to them.

Why iCloud alone is not a backup

iCloud Contacts is sync. Every change, including a deletion, reaches all your devices within moments. Data Recovery is a valuable safety net, but it sits inside the same account that had the problem, it restores everything or nothing, and it depends on archives you do not control.

A second copy outside the account closes those gaps:

  • Export a vCard from iCloud.com or the Contacts app once a month and before big changes.
  • Keep the file off the phone, in a place you control. A vCard file is not encrypted, so treat it like a printed address book.
  • Open it from time to time and check that the count looks right.

There is a fuller routine in back up iPhone contacts, and the format choice is explained in VCF or CSV for a contacts export.

Where Callmory fits

Callmory is an iPhone app that keeps your contacts together with your own notes and follow-ups. It is not a replacement for iCloud; it gives you the copy that lives outside any one account.

  • Contacts backup. Pick the contacts you want, from your phone or from Callmory, and save them as a portable VCF or CSV file. Send it to Mail, Files or any app you choose.
  • Encrypted app backup. Your people, notes, follow-ups and actual voice recordings can be saved as one password-protected, encrypted file.
  • Restore with a preview. Restoring a Callmory backup into Callmory shows a preview first, and a record that changed is never silently overwritten. Restoring straight into your iPhone's own Contacts app, with your approval, is in progress. Until it ships, a VCF from Callmory opens with the iPhone's standard import.

Unlike an iCloud archive, you decide what goes into the file and where it is kept. Callmory does not upload your address book in the background, and it never calls a backup complete for contacts it could not reach. Backup and restore are free; see pricing. The iPhone beta opens in stages through the waitlist, and Android comes later.

Frequently asked questions

Can I restore just one contact from iCloud?

Not with Data Recovery; it restores a whole earlier version of the list. To bring back one person, restore the archive, export that contact, then switch back, or import them from a VCF file you kept.

Will restoring from iCloud delete my new contacts?

Contacts added after the archive date are not in the restored version. iCloud archives your current list first, and exporting a vCard before you start makes it easy to add them back.

Why can't I see today's deleted contacts in Data Recovery?

Apple says a new archive can take up to 24 hours to appear after a recent deletion. Check again later before choosing a version.

Can I restore iCloud contacts from my iPhone?

Data Recovery runs on iCloud.com, and Apple says Contacts there needs a tablet or computer. The restored list then syncs back to your iPhone.
