iPhone contacts not showing or not syncing: a checklist

iPhone contacts not showing or not syncing with iCloud? Check lists, accounts, the default account and app access in order, before you delete or reset anything.

iPhone contacts not showing is one of the most worrying things a phone can do, but in most cases the contacts are not gone. They are hidden by a list setting, sitting in an account that stopped syncing, or blocked from one app by a permission. This checklist goes from the quickest checks to the slower ones, so you can find the cause without deleting or resetting anything.

Short answer: First open Contacts, tap Lists and choose the list that shows all contacts. Then check that Contacts is turned on for each account (iCloud, Gmail, Exchange) and that your default account is the one you expect. If iCloud contacts are not syncing, swipe down in the list to refresh, check you use the same Apple Account everywhere, and restart the phone. If only WhatsApp or another app misses contacts, check that app's Contacts access in Privacy & Security.

Before you start: don't make it worse

When contacts seem to vanish, the natural reaction is to switch things off and on until something changes. Some of those switches remove contacts from the phone or create duplicates. Two quick steps first:

  1. Look on the web. Sign in at icloud.com, or at contacts.google.com if you use Gmail, and see whether the missing people are there. If they are, your contacts are safe and this is a display or sync problem on the phone. If they are missing online too, this is a different problem; see how to recover deleted contacts.
  2. Make a copy of what you see now. If the phone still shows most of your contacts, export them to a VCF file before changing settings. The steps are in how to back up your iPhone contacts.

Menu names move a little between iOS versions. On iOS 18 and later, contact settings sit under Settings > Apps > Contacts; on iOS 17 and earlier they are under Settings > Contacts.

Step 1: check which list you are looking at

The Contacts app can show one account or one list at a time. If someone once picked a single list, everything else is quietly hidden.

  1. Open Contacts and tap Lists in the upper-left corner.
  2. Choose the list that covers everything, usually All Contacts. If you use iCloud, Apple's guidance is to make sure All iCloud is selected.
  3. Look at the number of contacts shown under each account. A count you did not expect is your first clue.

If the missing people appear now, you are done. If one account shows far fewer contacts than you remember, move on.

Step 2: check that each account syncs contacts

Your contacts can live in several accounts at once: iCloud, Gmail, Outlook or a work Exchange account, and sometimes only on the phone. If Contacts is switched off for an account, its contacts disappear from the iPhone but stay in the account online. More on this in where iPhone contacts are stored.

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Contacts > Accounts.
  2. Tap each account and check that Contacts is turned on.
  3. For iCloud, also open Settings, tap your name, then iCloud, and check that Contacts is on. On newer versions it may sit in the list of apps using iCloud.
  4. If a work account is missing, it may have been removed or limited by your employer. Contacts in a work account follow that account's rules.

Turning an account's Contacts back on can take a few minutes to fill the list, especially with many contacts and a slow connection.

Step 3: iCloud contacts not syncing between devices

If your contacts appear on one Apple device but not another, or a new contact never reaches your Mac or iPad, work through Apple's own checklist from If your iCloud Contacts won't sync:

  • Same Apple Account. Check you are signed in with the same Apple Account on every device.
  • Up to date. Install the latest iOS, iPadOS or macOS.
  • Date and time. Make sure they are correct for where you are; wrong dates can break syncing.
  • Refresh. Open Contacts and swipe down on the list.
  • Restart the app and the phone. Close Contacts, wait about a minute, reopen it. If that does not help, restart the iPhone.
  • Service status. Apple publishes a system status page; an outage on Apple's side looks exactly like a sync problem on yours.

The default account trap

A very common cause of "my new contact isn't on my other devices" is the default account. New contacts go to the default account, even if iCloud is turned on. If the default is Gmail or On My iPhone, new people never reach iCloud.

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Contacts.
  2. Tap Default Account and choose the account you want, such as iCloud.

This changes where new contacts go. Contacts you saved earlier stay where they are.

Turning iCloud Contacts off and on

Some people restart syncing by turning Contacts off in iCloud settings and back on. Apple's troubleshooting page does not list this as a step, and it is the riskiest move on this page: when you switch it off, iOS asks what to do with the copies on the phone, and the wrong choice can remove them from the device or create duplicates when they come back. If you try it, export a VCF file first and choose to keep the contacts on the phone.

Step 4: contacts missing in one app only, such as WhatsApp

If the Contacts app shows everyone but WhatsApp, a calling app or another app does not, the cause is usually that app's permission, not your contacts.

Since iOS 18, you can give an app full access to your contacts or limited access to only the people you pick. An app with limited access sees only those people. Apple explains this in control access to your contacts on iPhone.

  1. Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Contacts.
  2. Tap the app, for example WhatsApp.
  3. Check its contacts access. With limited access, tap Edit Selected Contacts to add people, or change the level of access.

For WhatsApp in particular, two more checks help:

  • Save numbers with the full country code, such as +44 or +90, so the app can match them to accounts.
  • Refresh the app's contact list after you change permissions, using the steps in WhatsApp's own help, since its menus change often.

If contacts were really deleted rather than hidden, a separate guide covers that: why contacts disappear explains the usual causes, and restoring contacts from iCloud walks through bringing back an earlier version.

Where Callmory fits

Callmory is an iPhone app, currently in a beta that opens in stages through the waitlist. It cannot fix a sync problem between Apple's servers and your phone, and it does not try to. What it does is make the question "where are my contacts and do I have a copy?" easier to answer.

  • It sees what iOS lets it see. Like WhatsApp, Callmory follows the access you grant. If you give it limited access, it works only with those people.
  • It never changes your phone's contacts on its own. You choose which contacts to bring in, nothing is uploaded silently, and editing a person in Callmory does not edit your iPhone's Contacts.
  • Backup today. You can pick contacts and save them as a portable VCF or CSV file, and keep your people, notes and follow-ups in one encrypted, password-protected app backup. Restoring a Callmory backup into Callmory shows a preview first and never silently overwrites a changed record.
  • In progress. A screen that shows which accounts your contacts live in and what Callmory can reach, and restoring straight into your iPhone's own Contacts with your approval, are still being built. Callmory never calls a backup complete for data it could not reach.

The full list of what is built today is on the home page, and support explains how to export or delete everything.

Frequently asked questions

Why are my iPhone contacts not showing after an update?

Usually a list or account setting changed, or syncing has not finished yet. Check Lists in Contacts, then the Contacts switch for each account, and give the phone a few minutes on Wi-Fi.

Why are my iCloud contacts not syncing to my Mac?

Check that both devices use the same Apple Account, that Contacts is on in iCloud settings on both, and that your iPhone's default account is iCloud. New contacts saved to Gmail or On My iPhone never reach iCloud.

Why can't WhatsApp see some of my contacts?

WhatsApp may have limited contacts access, which shows only the people you picked. Check it in Settings, Privacy and Security, Contacts, and save numbers with the country code.

Will turning iCloud Contacts off and on delete my contacts?

It can remove them from the phone or create duplicates, depending on what you choose when iOS asks. Export a VCF file first and choose to keep the contacts on the phone.
